mj thought she wanted to have swimming lessons. three tear-filled lessons later, she changed her mind. i am faced with a choice: get in the pool with her everyday or wait another summer to teach her to swim. today i got in the pool.my mady has always been a cautious one. probably because she is the daughter of a daughter of a big-time worrier. my mother is, shall we say, extremely cautious with her beloveds. to the point of borderline craziness. it is actually quite endearing. it makes you feel loved to be so fussed over and worried about. anyhoo, mj is, and has been since her babyhood, cautious. while all the other babies at little gym would jump up and around, mj held back. when her cousins were wild and climbing and running around, mj held back. mj doesn't like to jump on the trampoline with the big kids because they are "too jumpy." mj is afraid of bugs and won't walk without shoes outside because of "pokies." i shoulda known.
the whole time we swam, mj was saying "help" "help" "don't let go of me" "i don't want to drown" mixed in with "i like swimming" "i love you mommy so much." the poor baby is just scared. i coddled her through the whole class, making sure she could feel my hands on her and telling her momma's got you, momma's right here, momma will catch you. by the end of the day, she was putting her face in the water to blow bubbles and didn't want to leave. i enjoyed spending time laughing and playing just with my mady and hugging that cute wet little body. she says she is afraid she will "shrink." it is so cute that she says shrink instead of sink that i will not correct her, i just tell her i would not let her shrink. i will never let you shrink mady. momma's got you. momma's right here.

Boy, does this bring back the memories. It passes all to fast. Way to go Maddie! Soon you will be swimming like the fish. Way to go Mom, for not letting her shrink!
She is too funny! I have no good advice as all my kids love the water and are not scared of it... just be patient just like your always are!
Cute. We missed you at ballet. All the mommies are invited to watch your little ballerina perform and go through class on the 25th of this month. We will have refreshments and end for the summer.
She is too cute! I love all her sayings! I was a swim instructor for Gilbert for 6 years and my best advice would be just make her go by herself. It sounds mean but we wouldn’t allow the parents in the pool and there were many that would cry for up to 2 weeks but after that success! Give her time she just needs to get comfortable with the teacher and being in the water. Before you know it she will be a fish! I think it’s a lot harder on the mom watching her child frightened then it really is on them.
